Supporting employee wellness in 2020

Our employees are at the heart of our fabrication business. Without their skills and expertise, we simply would not be able to produce the quality fabrications that Hitherbest is known for. So, as a business, we work hard to keep hold of, and recruit, talented staff.

The business case for supporting employee wellness

While staff retention at Hitherbest is good, with 17 members of staff having been with the company for more than 10 years, like all businesses we are hit by staff absences and illnesses during the year which have a knock-on effect on productivity and performance. So, if as a business we can support our staff to improve their physical and mental health we hope that it will not only boost morale, but also be good for our bottom line.

Furthermore, in a competitive marketplace, it makes sense to invest in initiatives and perks that make our company an even more appealing place to work. Becoming “the employer of choice for talented and hard-working engineers” is an integral part of our vision for the business.

Putting employee wellness at the heart of our plans for Hitherbest

For these reasons, this year, we have decided to focus on improving employee wellness. We will be working with our staff, gathering their thoughts and ideas, and trialling a variety of ways to support them to improve their physical and mental health.

We are kicking off our wellness initiative this month, when all staff will be given free fruit at work, as well as access to local gym, pool and golf facilities at a reduced rate. In addition, a number of staff have volunteered to become mental health first aiders and will be soon be undergoing the training which will enable them to support colleagues with mental health issues. For the second year running, Hitherbest will also be holding a flu vaccination clinic and offering all staff the opportunity to have a free flu jab.

Marcus Clayton, finance manager, said “I am delighted that the company is looking at different ways to improve the physical and mental health of the employees. Benefits of fresh fruit and discounted gym memberships are already available, in addition to regular health checks. I am proud to work for such a progressive company.’”.

We hope to trial more initiatives as the year progresses, so keep an eye on our blog to find out more!
