Funding Boost For Efficiency Improvements

Share

Taking steps to save energy and to minimise the environmental impact of business are essential to tackle climate change, but also make good business sense. That’s why at Hitherbest we are celebrating securing two grants containing money from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) which will part-pay for improvements to our West Midlands manufacturing facility.

Work has already begun on this tranche of improvements, which are designed to reduce energy consumption, cut noise pollution and improve productivity.

Improvements to goods in/out cuts noise and heat loss

In November 2018 Hitherbest secured £30,000 in matched funding from Birmingham City Council’s Business Growth Programme – an initiative designed to “strengthen supply chains, stimulate innovation and grow small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) across The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership area.”

Hitherbest is using this money to purchase state-of-the-art roller shutter doors, creating a fast-acting thermal curtain for goods in/out, and to improve the electrical capacity of its manufacturing plant in Telford, Shropshire.

These improvements will reduce noise pollution, cut heat loss and enable the company to scale-up manufacturing output during the night. Having the ability to manufacture 24 hours a day is vital to the company, which has a hard-won reputation for short lead times and exceptional customer service. The planned upgrade to the plant’s electricity supply will enable existing machinery to work more effectively and additional machines to be installed as the company grows.

Monitoring energy consumption in real time to optimise production

Following the success of the company’s application to the Business Growth Programme, Hitherbest secured £3000 of EDRF support from the Business Energy Efficiency Programme (BEEP) – a partnership between Worcestershire Councils, Herefordshire Council, Telford & Wrekin Council, Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce and Shropshire Council.

This money is being spent on work to install data loggers to major pieces of equipment, enabling the management team to track gas and electricity consumption in real-time and adjust manufacturing operations to save energy and improve efficiency.

Investing for the future

Hitherbest is hugely grateful to the Business Growth Programme and BEEP for recognising the growth trajectory of the business and for their assistance in funding these efficiency improvements.

As a thriving company, Hitherbest is continually investing in its manufacturing facilities and skilled workforce. Over the last 12 months more than £225,000 has been spent on improvements to its West Midlands site, with further investments planned for 2019.
