Hitherbest Owner and Director, Dr. Nicky Evans, has recently trained as a mentor and will begin working with 2 young people from Telford College in September.
Nicky has committed to sitting down with her 16-year old mentees for an hour every month, for the next year, to learn more about them, their hopes and aspirations for the future, and the challenges they face in realising their aspirations. As their mentor, she will work with them to identify ways in which they might be able to reach their goals – drawing from her own experience as a student, in academia, the charitable sector and, of course, in business.
Nicky responded to a request for mentors from One Million Mentors, a charitable organisation that has recently expanded its operations into the West Midlands. One Million Mentors has a mission to connect one million mentors with one million young people “in order to increase youth employability, support social action and help break down social barriers”.
Nicky said “I am delighted to be working with One Million Mentors and am really looking forward to meeting my mentee(s) at Telford College in September. I know that many young people face a number of challenges in their day-to-day lives, including the pressure of exams and the need to make important decisions about their future, and I hope that having someone completely independent to talk to will be helpful. I feel lucky that throughout my career I have had the good fortune to work with a number of inspiring people – including the incredible team we have at Hitherbest. Like most people though, I have also known adversity and I understand the importance of encouragement and impartial advice. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to work with these young people from our fantastic local community.”
